I was a 3rd grade teacher in the Marshall Islands last school year. Even though I have returned to the states I still try to keep in touch with my kids as much as possible. I have written them several letters and sent them some Fall leaves (they have never seen Autumn in real life). So I was thinking the other day that I should make/send them all something. So I started thinking....humm what should I make. I am crafty by nature and so making things is almost "a duh"! The Marshallese girls have such lovely hair and so I thought I would make, the girls, some cute little headbands!
First I went to the store and bought some of those elastic/stretchy headbands.
Than I pulled out the scraps of fabric that I had lying around. I measured the headband all the way around and it was 18 inches. Than I measured around my head and it was 23 inches. I calculated 1 inch for seam allowance. I made a little pattern piece out of paper (1 1/2 inches wide and 12 inches long) I made it 12 inches long with the intention that the fabric would be folded in half. So than I just pinned my pattern to my fabric and cut it out carefully.
Once my piece was cut out I needed to do something with the rough edges. So I ironed the edges in about 1/4 of an inch.
Than I folded the fabric in half longways and pinned it around my elastic band. The elastic band should be next to the fold and then there will be the ironed edge where you will sew. I machine stitched near the edge. The fabric should be too large for the elastic. So when pinning the fabric around the headband you will have to scrunch it up. (This is so when it is stretched over their head it will lay more flat.
I them Machine stitched all the way around (stretching out the material so it was flat).
take your pins out and cut any loose strings...vwalla....Finished!! They are super easy and cute!! I made 11 of them, so after the first 2 I was basically a pro!
